Figma x Contra
Makeathon Analysis

Three editions. Thousands of participants. One question: what separates winners from the crowd? We scraped real Contra data to find out.

The Formula — derived from 4,212 posts across 3 editions
To win =
An interaction design that surprises people
Not a feature. Not a screen. A moment that makes someone think "how did they do that?"
×
A working video that proves it
40–90% of winners included a demo video vs 7–56% of non-winners. Screenshots don't move. Ideas need proof.
+
Post before the crowd does
In the 8-day Sep 2025 window, winners posted 0.8 days earlier on average. Early posts compound engagement while others are still designing.
+
Something people actually want to share
Winners averaged 54.4 likes vs 7.1 for non-winners. That gap isn't luck — it's the community recognizing work worth spreading.
The judges don't comment on posts before announcing winners. They review externally. You cannot game the selection — only the quality of the work.

What the Data Shows

4,219 in-window posts analyzed. Real engagement data. Real winners. Three editions.

7.7× Engagement Gap

Winners averaged 54.4 likes vs 7.1 for non-winners across all three editions. High engagement and winning co-occur because quality drives both.

Video is the Strongest Signal

40–90% of winners included a video demo vs only 7–56% of non-winners. A working demo shows the interaction is real and drives shares.

Cara Ellis Had 217 Likes

The Sep 2025 winner's Web Poetry post was the 3rd most-liked post in the entire 8-day contest window. Winning and community popularity aligned.

Lee Black Won Twice

The only two-time winner: Airwwave (March 2026) and Connected Earth (Config 2026). Entirely different projects, same consistent quality.

Methodology Note

6,030 posts scraped via authenticated Contra GraphQL API from within the browser (session auth bypassed the 2,020-result anonymous cap). Two sort passes per tag (ENGAGEMENT + CREATED_AT). Filtered to 4,219 in-window posts across all 3 editions. Config 2026 winners announced at Config, June 23, 2026. Full methodology in the report.
